Building
management capability is critical to New
Zealand’s economic and social future so NZIM
has recently introduced an exciting new initiative,
the NZIM Management Cadetship Programme.
A management cadetship offers one year’s paid
work experience (full-time or part-time) and provides
the opportunity for the cadet to continue their tertiary
education. The scheme is designed to put those
who have already shown interest in, or aptitude
for, a career in management in touch with
employers looking for talented and enthusiastic young leaders.
The programme was launched in a small way in 2005,
with the first cadetship being offered in 2006 by the
YMCA of Invercargill Charitable Trust. The cadet,
John Bezuidenhout, undertook a variety of work
for the YMCA while studying at the Southern Institute
of Technology (SIT) for a New Zealand Diploma
in Business, an NZIM Diploma in Management
and a SIT Diploma in Human Resource Management.
Sharon Woodings, the Executive Officer of the YMCA
in Invercargill, said that John contributed significantly
to the YMCA’s work through his various
responsibilities. ‘He has also been able to bring
ideas and information to the YMCA from his study and
that has been beneficial to us she said. Mrs Woodings
was delighted with how the cadetship has worked for
the YMCA.
In recognition of the significant role that businesses
offering cadetships play in the programme, NZIM will
offer each business with a cadet:
- a 50% reduction
of corporate membership fee plus a total of two
days free training for an employee or employees
- or a total of three days free training
for an employee or employees
This will apply
for each cadetship in the year in which the
cadetship is held. NZIM will also offer each cadet
individual NZIM membership and two days free training
for the year of his / her cadetship.
Identification and development of management and leadership
skills is a lifelong learning process and the
sooner young people embark on the journey the better
for every kind of organisation in New Zealand.
